As a child care provider, you’ve probably wondered how playing can be helpful for a child’s development. Care Courses has several courses that explore how to effectively use play in daily activities to further the growth and development of a child.
Today I am going to focus on a few ideas from our course, The Magic of Play.
Researchers have studied the role of play in the growth and development of children and found that constructive play is an essential building block for healthy children as well as a critical part of the foundation children need to lead well-adjusted, happy, and productive lives.
Play has many positive benefits including:
- The development of motor skills.
- The understanding and practice of sharing, turn taking, and other peer cooperation skills.
- The expansion of imagination, creativity, and curiosity.
You can play a critical role in ensuring children are provided with the time, space, and tools for make-believe play. A child’s imagination is a key component in creative play.
Play is the context in which children are free to be creative. A child can get absorbed in his or her own world with the right tools and opportunities. Performing a make-believe play or having children write a story from their own imaginations can be great outlets for creativity. Include the whole group, provide a basic concept and watch as the children run with the idea!
In our course, The Magic of Play, we discuss the importance of play and imagination in a child’s early development. We addressed a few of them in this blog. Want to learn more? Find The Magic of Play on our website.
